Two Decatur High School students were taken to the hospital Monday morning after coming into contact with a school bus at a crosswalk near the school.
The incident occurred about 7:23 a.m. at 320th Street and 27th Avenue SW, according to police. District spokeswoman Diane Turner said that the injuries did not appear serious. Turner said that three students were crossing in the crosswalk when they came into contact with the bus, but it was unclear whether the driver or the students were at fault. One of those three students was transported to St. Francis Hospital; another student who was aboard the bus was also taken to the hospital, Turner said.
Of the students on foot, two were in eleventh grade, one in ninth. The injured student from the bus is 20 and was being transported to classes at Highline Community College.
Per district procedure, the bus driver was immediately placed on administrative leave. The driver was then interviewed by police and district security officials. A drug and alcohol test was also administered. The results of the test and the text of the interview, when completed, will be forwarded to the district’s human resources department.
Turner said that the students’ parents were immediately contacted. Federal Way police and school district security personnel are still investigating the incident.
