A veteran South King Fire and Rescue firefighter remains in intensive care nearly three weeks after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 5 while in the line of duty.

Wynn Loiland, 52, has yet to regain full consciousness, and is currently at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle under a constant vigil from his family, according to the fire district. Loiland, a 31-year veteran firefighter, is showing signs of responsiveness, the district reports.

On Nov. 20, Loiland was among a crew assessing the scene of an early-morning one-car rollover accident on southbound I-5 near 272nd Street in Federal Way. According to the fire district, a Chevrolet Blazer traveling on southbound I-5 apparently hit an icy spot and lost control while approaching the scene. The vehicle struck Loiland on the road’s right shoulder and narrowly missed another firefighter and a lieutenant, according to the district. Loiland suffered severe head and facial injuries, a collapsed lung and a broken arm.

The accident is under investigation by the Washington State Patrol. There was no alcohol involved and no criminal findings have been reported.

Members of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2024 and South King Fire and Rescue personnel remain committed to supporting their brother firefighter and his family, according to a news release from the fire district. Well-wishers have come forward from more than half of the states in the country and from overseas.
