Students at Todd Beamer High School were placed under lockdown this morning after rumors that a school shooting would take place at 10:30 a.m.

Federal Way Public Schools spokeswoman Ann Cook said after having police and security investigate, the status of the lockdown changed at 11 a.m. to a modified lockdown so that students could grab lunch and move throughout the building. All exterior doors are still locked.

Several students and some parents reported seeing the rumored threat on social media and text messages, but at this point the information is hearsay and second-hand.

“‘I heard there would be a shooting today at school,’ ‘I heard someone’s going to bring a gun today at school,'” Cook said, as she gave examples of the rumor. “That’s really what the principal, security and police right now are trying to work through, that conversation that’s happened on social media and texts, to see if they can identify a source for that. Is there a threat somewhere or is it simply rumors?”

News of the initial lockdown went out to parents at around 10 a.m. with an update to the modified lockdown sent out at 11 a.m. Cook anticipates the next update to the investigation and a letter to go out to parents at around 1:30 p.m. Schools will dismiss at regular time, but all after-school activities have been canceled.

The Mirror will update this report as more information becomes available.
