Here are the latest Federal Way election results, according to the King County Elections website, as of 5 p.m. Aug. 18. Results will be updated daily at kingcounty.gov/elections with results certified on Aug. 31.
The top two candidates in each race will face off in the November general election.
Federal Way City Council position 3
• Mark Koppang: 20.55 percent (1,806 votes)
• Roger Flygare: 22.59 percent (1,985 votes)
• Susan Honda: 47.89 percent (4,209 votes)
• Scott Sparling: 8.4 percent (738 votes)
• Write-in: 51 votes
• Notes: The candidates are running for a seat vacated by Councilman Mike Park. Koppang officially conceded the race on Thursday. “This has been a tremendously gratifying experience for me and my family. I enjoyed campaigning with Susan and Roger and look forward to a spirited and clean race between them this fall,” Koppang said.
Honda and Flygare will continue campaigning. “I am very excited and actually very humbled that I had so much support from our citizens,” Honda said. She credits the doorbelling of nearly 1,500 homes as a key to her primary election win. “I had a number of people tell me they supported me because I came and talked to them. I’m just very excited and ready to keep working,” she said. As of this writing, Flygare awaited the counting of more ballots before drawing any definite conclusions about this primary election race. “I’m going to keep campaigning,” he said. “We’ll see what the certified election results say when we see them.”
Federal Way School Board position 3
• Danny Peterson: 35.91 percent (4,700 votes)
• Liz Drake: 47.94 percent (6,274 votes)
• Carrie BeSerra: 15.52 percent (2,031 votes)
• Write-in: 83 votes
• Notes: The candidates are running for a seat vacated by Amye Bronson-Doherty. Drake thought her experience and credentials, including serving as principal at Todd Beamer High School, helped give her campaign the edge. “I can be the ears and voice of the public, but I can also bring to the table research and ideas to help us work through how we’re going to improve the dropout rate,” she said. Peterson thought his experience with education and mentoring in the schools and community helped him finish in the top two. “It just really affirmed that the district thinks I’m a good person to be running for school board,” he said. “It’s a whole new ballgame for November.”
Veterans and Human Services Levy (King County Prop. 1)
• Approved: 68.61 percent (199,987 votes)
• Rejected: 31.39 percent (91,477 votes)
• Notes: The measure will continue the existing levy for six more years at the current rate of 5 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. Consistent with the current levy, half of the proceeds would be dedicated exclusively for programs to assist veterans and their families. The other half would support human service programs available to all King County residents.

• Debates: General election debates for three city council races are scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at Federal Way High School. The same candidates will participate in a forum earlier that day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club.
