Kirsten Collingwood and her daughter Jennifer said they wouldn’t miss former Seattle Mariners right fielder Jay “Bone” Buhner’s appearance in Federal Way on Sunday.

The duo, along with Chris Baldwin and Calaya Ruoff, were the first in line at 6:15 a.m. — more than six hours before Buhner was expected to sign autographs during DICK’s Sporting Goods’ grand opening at The Commons mall.

At 12:30 p.m. when Buhner arrived, over 150 Mariners fans stood in a line that wrapped around the entrance of the store.

Buhner is among the most recognizable players of his time, well known for his shaved head, thick goatee and patch of pine tar on the right hip of his uniform, according to the Mariners’ website. The song “Bad to the Bone” was played during each of his home at-bats.

He hit his stride in 1991, hitting 27 home runs with 77 RBI, the website continues.

Buhner, who now lives in Sammamish, retired in 2001 as one of the most popular players in Mariners history.

DICK’S Sporting Goods’ sixth store in Washington is located at 1819 S. Commons, Federal Way.
