Federal Way Public Schools will celebrate the induction of its seventh Athletic Hall of Fame class at Todd Beamer High School the evening of Oct. 22.

The honorees represent the finest in athletic administration, coaching, program development and have made a significant impact on the district’s athletic program, school district officials said.

The inductees will be presented during the Decatur vs. Thomas Jefferson football game that next evening on Oct. 23.

The Hall of Fame class of 2014/2015 features four coaches who left a lasting mark on the district’s athletic programs and enriched the lives of their athletes.

Tom Eilertson graduated from Decatur High School in 1979 and started teaching at Illahee Middle School in 1984. Eilertson has coached wrestling for 25 years and football and track for 30 years and is still going strong. His impact on the Illahee athletic and P.E. program is immeasurable. He has coached 85 teams over 30 years and all bear his trademark of doing things correctly and working your very hardest. His enthusiastic support of all athletes and programs is the cornerstone of Illahee’s phenomenal success.

Mike Grady grew up in Federal Way, graduating from Decatur. He started his career at Totem Middle School where he coached track and boys and girls basketball for 11 years. His first Totem track team had 22 participants and his last had 185, demonstrating Grady’s tremendous ability to get students involved. His teams won three district championships in track and two in basketball. Grady went on the coach girls basketball at Thomas Jefferson High School for six years where his teams won at least 10 games every year culminating in Jefferson’s first appearance in the state tournament. Grady finished his Jefferson career as athletic director, initiating several facility improvements and starting the Raider parent booster club.

Ron Mattila has been an elementary P.E. specialist for over 30 years. He has coached elementary and high school track, often volunteering as an official at middle and high school meets. Mattila is largely responsible for developing the district elementary track “play-day” into a nationally recognized program that today has all 23 district schools with over 2000 participants competing in four meets during the spring. Mattila’s commitment to the program is legendary – he is known as Mr. Elementary Track, officials said.

Bud Hatley Administrator Award

For the first time this year, two district administrators will also be recognized with the Bud Hatley Award for their support of school and district athletic programs. Hatley was a longtime district athletic director. His widow, Pat, will present this year’s awards to Randy Kaczor and Mark Davidson.

Mark Davidson taught at Lakota Middle School from 1979 thru 1988. In addition to his regular teaching duties, Davidson coached junior varsity basketball as the assistant and eventually head wrestling coach. He was always available to help out at athletic events whenever needed. He also found time to be the football game timer, the starter for track meets and the assistant starter for the junior high district track meets. He was someone coaches could count on to help them with the extra duties and tasks required for their respective sports. Davidson spent two years as athletic director and the assistant principal at Federal Way High School from 1988 through 1990 and spent many nights supervising night activities and events.

Davidson returned to Kilo Middle School from 1990 through 1998 to serve as assistant principal and later, principal. He continued to support athletics in those roles. In 1998, Davidson moved to the district offices, where he continued his support of athletic programs. In 1999 he assumed responsibility for overseeing athletic programs for the entire district and continued in that position until 2012. Today, as deputy superintendent, Davidson continues to be a strong supporter for athletics in Federal Way Public Schools.

Randy Kaczor began working with Federal Way Public Schools in 1974. He taught for one year at Lakeland Elementary, two years at Kilo and 13 years at Illahee. He became the assistant principal at Illahee in 1991 and continued in that position until 1996 when he became Illahee’s principal – a position he held from 1996 to 2002. At Illahee, Kaczor coached girls basketball and strongly supported and supervised all athletic events and student activities. He became the principal of Federal Way High School in 2003 and continued in that position through 2006. At the high school level, Kaczor continued to be a strong believer and supporter of the district’s athletic programs. In 2007, he became the interim principal at Sacajawea Middle School and continues in that job at the present time. He served on the WCD III Executive board for three years, from 2010 through 2013. Kaczor has always been a strong advocate for athletic programs in the Federal Way School District and has worked hard to improve and expand Federal Way athletics.

The induction ceremony is open to the public and will be at on Oct. 22 at Todd Beamer High School, located at 35999 16th Avenue South in Federal Way. For more information, visit www.fwps.org.
