The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man who was shot and killed when two Federal Way police fired on him on Oct. 8.

The officers shot at Ricardo Hernandez, 21, who died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Hernandez, armed with knives, reportedly lunged at police during the incident.

At 5:40 p.m. on Oct. 8, police were dispatched to a mobile home park in the 3000 block of South 288th Street for a domestic violence call between two brothers – one armed with a knife. According to police, family members of the brothers had locked themselves in a room in the residence during the confrontation.

Federal Way police officers helped the family members escape through a window while Hernandez, armed with knives, confronted more officers outside. Hernandez reportedly stated he wanted to die before moving toward them, at which point the two officers fired.

Per standard procedures in such cases, both officers were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident by the Renton Police Department.
