A few tweaks in the holiday decorating plan will save Federal Way some money.

LED lights and a decrease in the number of trees adorned with bulbs this holiday season will save the city $3,041, according to a graph provided by spokeswoman Linda Farmer.

City staff began decorating its street-side trees two weeks ago. All the trees are expected to be lighted Nov. 25. They will remain on until Jan. 1.

Unlike in past years, the lights will only appear on every other tree in the downtown core this year. Additionally, they will only be placed along South 320th Street and Pacific Highway South, rather than throughout downtown. The new lighting scheme itself would have saved the city $2,279, had the city chosen to use incandescent bulbs in the light strands.

But LED lights replaced the old-fashioned bulbs, further increasing the savings. The city is saving $762 by using LED lights, according to the graph.

In 2008, the city spent $3,227 to light all its trees in the downtown area. This year, the total electricity cost is expected to ring in at $185.79, according to the graph.
