Federal Way man shot, killed by Tacoma police identified

The shooting occurred on Feb. 24 in Tacoma.

A Federal Way man was shot and killed by Tacoma Police last month, according to officials.

Steven Wohlwend, 31 of Federal Way, died from a gunshot wound to the torso, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Around 10:45 p.m. Feb. 24, Tacoma Police officers responded to reports of a man with a gun at the Marriott Hotel on Commerce Street, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT).

On scene, victim and witnesses statements allowed officers to develop probable cause to arrest an armed robbery suspect. Officers initiated a K9 track, leading them to Dock Street near the 11th Street bridge in Tacoma, according to the PCFIT.

At about 11:21 p.m., officers stated they had the suspect — identified as Wohlwend — at gunpoint and that he was refusing to show his hands, PCFIT stated. One minute later, officers shot Wohlwend.

Aid was administered on scene until Wohlwend was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A gun was recovered from the scene. There were no injuries to any Tacoma officers.
