The Federal Way Police Department bomb squad was called into action Thursday night after a pipe bomb was brought to the Pacific police station by a concerned citizen.

According to reports, the unnamed citizen brought in what he thought was a metal tent pole around 5:30 p.m. July 21. The man said he had found it in a local park in Pacific. On closer inspection, the “tent pole” was discovered to be closed at both ends, and a short fuse was attached to the device. Pacific police placed the device on the front lawn of the police station and evacuated the area immediately.

Federal Way bomb squad members were called into to defuse the device. Using a remote-controlled robot, they moved the device to a safer location and were able to successfully defuse it there. According to reports, Pacific police spokesperson Stephanie Shook said the device “contained black powder and could have caused substantial injuries and/or damage to property.”

The intent and origins of the bomb are still unknown at this time.
