Three people were sent to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after a serious car accident Monday morning.

Federal Way police said the accident occurred at approximately 11:18 a.m. as a black sports car, traveling at a very high rate of speed westbound, collided with two vehicles waiting turning left from the northbound I-5 off ramp.

The black sports car then hit two additional vehicles waiting at the intersection that were heading eastbound.

Police said the driver of the black Challenger, a 42-year-old man from Des Moines, is considered the suspect in this investigation due to “witness reports of erratic driving and high rates of speed.”

The man sustained serious injuries and is considered in custody awaiting felony charges. Police are recommending the King County Prosecutor’s Office charge him with vehicular assault and DUI (pending a toxicology test). The man has one DUI out of Texas from 2006.

The other two drivers are described as a woman born in 1980 with two children in the vehicle — an infant and toddler. The children were evaluated at the scene and accompanied their mother to the hospital. Police describe the woman as an Auburn resident with brain, neck and internal injuries.

The other injured driver was 48-year-old woman from Tacoma. She was transported to the hospital as well for critical internal injuries.

As of Monday afternoon, there are no known fatalities, however, there were also two other victims who did not sustain injuries — a 49-year-old Puyallup man with a 35-year-old female passenger and a 75-year-old woman from Federal Way.

A section of South 320th Street was closed for four hours on Monday.

Federal Way Police traffic investigators are requesting anyone that witnessed the collision or observed the black sports car prior to the collision, to call the Federal Way Police Department at 253-835-2121.
