The Mirror, along with members of the Federal Way City Council, greeted the opening of Hobby Lobby with great fanfare, but omitted several important and newsworthy items in its stories.
Hobby Lobby discriminates against women because the owner has decided that his religious beliefs trump federal law. David Green, owner of Hobby Lobby, opposes paying for the contraceptive provisions required by the Affordable Care Act. Green contends that he should be afforded the same exemptions extended to churches.
But the federal courts disagreed, and turned down Green’s lawsuit making Hobby Lobby liable for fines of up to $1.3 million per day. Hobby Lobby responded by utilizing a legal loophole to forestall fines by shifting the annual renewal date for employee health insurance.
Green turns the meaning of religious freedom on its head. Apparently Green, through Hobby Lobby, believes religious freedom allows him to impose his family’s religious beliefs on his employees. Hobby Lobby is a scofflaw and a bully. Hobby Lobby is not a good neighbor.
