MAY EVENTS

Safe City: A Safe City launch party will take place noon to 3 p.m. May 27 at City Hall, 33325 8th Ave. S., in the council chambers. Safe City, a nationwide program supported by the Target Corporation, takes advantage of 27 closed-circuit cameras in the downtown core. Marine Science Camp: Highline Community College’s Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center will host its free annual Summer on the Sound Marine Science Camp. Deadline to apply is May 29. Campers spend a week during the summer on Redondo Beach learning through hands-on activities about ecology, geology, oceanography, marine biology and water quality. The two camp sessions are 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 20-24 for ages 7-10, and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 17-21 for ages 11-13. Veteran breakfast: Veterans in the Federal Way area are invited to join veterans who are residents of Village Green Retirement Campus for breakfast at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 26. Women’s Bible study: “Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed: A study of David,” with video instruction by Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore and Kay Arthur. Meeting at SeaTac Bible Church (just east, off Military Road), 29926 37th Ave. S., 7 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday from May 26 to July 7. All women of the community are welcome. Clothing bank: The Federal Way Clothing Bank is in need of clothing and shoes (especially men’s). The clothing bank also needs small household items such as dishes, pots and pans, silverware, glasses, bedding, towels and small appliances. It will all go to good homes. Bug of the month: Kids and parents can learn about beneficial and harmful insects, and those that are just ugly or curious-looking, at “Bug of the Month: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” King County Master Gardeners will teach the free class at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. June 6, July 4, Aug. 1, Sept. 5 and Oct. 3 at the Federal Way Farmers Market, located at The Commons mall parking lot.

Family connections: A workshop titled “Back to basics: Family connection stimulus package” will be 7 p.m. June 10 at Wayside United Church of Christ, 2000 Dash Point Road SW, Federal Way. Cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple. To register, call (253) 838-0915 or (253) 874-2084.

Driver safety course: An AARP driver safety course will be held at the following locations. Foster care support group: A new Fostering Together Foster Care Support Group in Federal Way will meet 7 to 9 p.m. every second Friday of the month at Our Savior’s Baptist Church, 701 S. 320th St. The group launches June 12. Call (253) 859-9385 or e-mail khaugland@comcast.net.

Celebrity golf: The 33rd annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will take place June 11 at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way. Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Federal Way/Auburn as well as the EX3 Ron Sandwith Teen Center. Cost is $250 per golfer. Each team of four is matched with a sports or media celebrity in a team scramble format. Fire board in 2009: South King Fire and Rescue commissioner meetings will be 4 p.m. June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 19, Nov. 17 and Dec. 17 at Station 68, 1405 SW 312th St., Federal Way.

Kent mayor race: Jim Berrios announced his intention to run for mayor of Kent. Berrios is currently the president of the Kent School Board and the owner of the Golden Steer restaurant on East Hill. Berrios is planning a campaign kickoff at the Golden Steer from 6 to 8 p.m. June 8. RSVP by calling (253) 852-1144.

Book club: The Multicultural Book Club will discuss “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseni at 7 p.m. June 10 at the Federal Way 320th Library, 848 S. 320th St. This is a novel set in Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion and through the Taliban’s rise to power. Outdoor furniture sale: The Greater Federal Way Kiwanis Club will holds its annual outdoor furniture sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 at the old Lowe’s hardware store, 35205 16th Ave. S. Proceeds will benefit the Thomas Jefferson High School Key Club as well as the Kiwanis Club’s reading program in the Federal Way School District.

Salmon Bake: The annual Federal Way Kiwanis Salmon Bake will run 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Steel Lake Park, 2410 S. 312th St. Proceeds from this event help to support community programs and student projects including Terrific Kids, Builders Club, Key Club and student scholarships. The club also supports the Multi-Service Center, Federal Way Senior Center, FUSION, Community Supper and the PTSA clothing bank.
