Jefferson blows out Kent-Meridian for first win of the season

In a battle of winless teams, the Thomas Jefferson Raiders overwhelmed the Kent-Meridian Royals Friday night at French Field, 52-7.

The Raiders’ offense exploded against the Royals (0-7). Entering Friday night’s game, TJ had tallied only 66 points in six games before scoring eight touchdowns against Kent-Meridian.

The Raiders (1-6) got two touchdowns from wide receivers Scott Sanford and Jonny Volland and two touchdown runs from Michael Sallee. Quarterback K.W. Williams also had a pair of touchdown passes and a 2-yard TD run.

Jefferson jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Williams’ scoring run and a 27-yard pass from Williams to Volland in the first quarter.

Kent-Meridian’s only touchdown followed on an 80-yard run by B.J. Arceneaux.

But it was all TJ after that. The Raiders scored 38 unanswered points, including an 88-yard touchdown return by Sanford on the Royals’ ensuing kickoff.

Volland finished the night with four catches for 95 yards and also returned a fumble four yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Keegan Giles rushed for 87 yards and Sallee scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 4 yards.

Bethel 35, Beamer 13 (Friday)

The Braves (5-1) remained in second place in the SPSL South with the win over Beamer Friday night at Art Crate Stadium. The loss dropped the Titans to 2-4 in the South and 3-4 overall.

Bethel jumped on Beamer with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. But the Titans got back into the game with a 16-yard touchdown run by Nicky Fualaau to cut the lead to 14-7.

But Bethel’s Brandon Bailey kicked a pair of 42-yard field goals in the second quarter to give the Braves a 20-7 lead at the half.

Fualaau tallied his second touchdown run of the game early in the third quarter to cut the Bethel lead to 20-13. But the Braves scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Auburn 71, Decatur 0 (Friday)

The undefeated and third-ranked Auburn Trojans inched closer toward the postseason with a 71-0 non-league win over the Decatur Gators Friday at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

The Trojans (6-0 SPSL North, 7-0 overall) piled up five touchdowns in the first quarter, with senior Chris Young opening the scoring frenzy by blocking a punt and recovering it in the end zone for a touchdown. Young would add a 47-yard rushing touchdown in the contest.

Senior Austin Embody lead Auburn runners with three touchdowns, including a 77-yard run for a TD in the second quarter. Embody finished with 131 yards on the ground, with Young amassing 107 rushing yards. Junior Alphonse Wade finished with 117 yards and two touchdown runs, including a 66-yard scamper.

Senior quarterback Marshall Klontz also got in on the action with a 3-yard TD run and backup running backs Josh Knight and Trey Grant had a rushing touchdown each. As a team, the Trojans ran for 455 yards total.

The loss dropped the Gators to 2-5 overall. Decatur gets back into its SPSL South season Friday against Graham-Kapowsin.
