From staff reports:

Kiel Hicks, a soon-to-be eighth-grader at Totem Middle School, came home with four medals, including two golds, from the USA Karate National Championships in Greenville, S.C. The event took place July 8 to 11.

Hicks’ two gold medals earned him national championship titles in Boys Advance Open Kata (forms) and in Boys Elite Kumite (sparring). Hicks fought in the 45 kilogram division. Hicks also won a silver and bronze medal in South Carolina.

The Kumite championship earned him a spot on the United States Junior Team. Hicks travelled to Montreal with Team USA for the Junior Pan-Am Games earlier this month.

Hicks finished up with a bronze medal in the Kumite 45-kilogram division. The Junior Pan-Am Games included athletes from 17 countries from Central, North and South America. Team USA took a delegation of 80 athletes and won 32 total medals.
