Beamer went into their May 12 West Central District playoff game against Timberline on Tuesday looking to clinch their second consecutive berth in the state playoffs. Instead, the Blazers handed them their worst loss of the season.
Beamer lost 9-0 in a game that got out of hand quickly. After a somewhat quiet first inning that saw a run come home due to a couple of passed balls, the Blazers erupted for five runs in the second.
The biggest blow in the second for the Titans was the two-run inside-the-park home run given up to Timberline’s Tony Ortiz. Beamer pitcher Taylor Davis threw 67 pitches in the two innings. He was also one of two Titans with a hit in the game.
Another three runs were added in the fourth inning during a two-out rally for Timberline. A chopper that never left the infield but bounced high enough to render Beamer unable to make a play defensively kept the inning alive and the Blazers capitalized.
The Titans were unable to get anything going offensively as well, as they could not solve the sidearm pitching of Timberline’s Zach Owens. Owens completed the game with two hits, two walks, one hit batter, no runs and nine strikeouts.
The pitching settled in for Beamer when Cameron Naden took the mound in the fifth. He only allowed one hit and struck out two.
Prior to this game, the Titans had only allowed more than five runs twice all season and had been shut out only twice. It was an anomaly at the worst time for the Titans.
The loss did not eliminate them from a shot at the state playoffs. They played Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell’s alma mater, Yelm High School, Thursday after the Mirror’s publishing deadline.
Decatur loses late to Puyallup
Decatur’s Garrett Westberg pitched great for five innings against the Vikings. After holding them scoreless for those innings, Puyallup would tag him for six runs in the sixth.
Excluding those runs scored in the sixth, Westberg was having another stellar day on the mound as he has all season. He pitched five-and-a-third innings and gave up six hits, six runs with only three being earned, one walk and had 10 strikeouts.
The Gators were unable to solve Puyallup’s Christopher Micheles who only allowed one hit, one walk and struck out seven in the complete game shutout.
Decatur was not eliminated from state playoff contention and played Emerald Ridge Thursday after the Mirror’s publishing deadline.
