Federal Way siblings compete in the National Junior Olympic Track Field Championships

Events took place July 23-29 at the North Carolina A&T State University

Three Federal Way residents competed in the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships last week, with one of them placing ninth in the four-by-four relay.

All three of the students are children of Trenise Rogers, a Federal Way resident since 1997 and a very proud mother.

“We as a family enjoy track and field,” she said. “We travel the country enjoying the sport.”

Her children Brittany, Anisah and Keith Jr. all competed in the championships, which took place July 23-29 at the North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. They competed in the 800-meter run, the shot put, the long jump and the four-by-four relay, respectively.

Rogers’ oldest daughter Brittany, 18, competed in the 800-meter run.

Brittany recently graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School and will be attending Ottawa University in Arizona this fall on a track and field scholarship.

This was the last time Brittany could compete in the Junior Olympics. She is excited to continue her sports career in college and hopes to go on to compete in the regular Olympics one day.

“It was kind of a taste of college in a sense,” she said about the competitive track environment.

Anisah, 12, a student at Annie Wright Day School, competed in the shot put event. Her favorite part was driving to North Carolina because she was so excited to go. She doesn’t feel her young age holds her back from participating.

“I do my best and age is not really an issue when I compete,” she said.

Keith Jr., age 12 and Anisah’s twin, also attends Annie Wright with her . He competed in both the long jump and the four-by-four relay, where he and his teammates placed ninth overall for their age division.

Both Keith Jr. and Anisah are hoping to go back in future years.

“I want to try to make it in the same events, and a couple more,” Keith Jr. said.

At school, both Anisah and Keith play soccer and basketball. Brittany was involved in track during her time at Bellarmine.

Their mother said all three started participating in track and field at a young age, with Brittany starting in preschool and Anisah and Keith Jr. starting as kindergartners.

She said her kids have been working toward competing in the Junior National Olympics for over five years, but this is the first year they qualified for nationals.

The qualifiers took place last month in Bend, Oregon.
