Federal Way’s third annual We Scare Hunger food drive is getting bigger and better.

The local We Scare Hunger efforts are an outgrowth of a national campaign organized by the nonprofit organization, Free The Children. Students in the U.S. and Canada trick-or-treat in their communities on Halloween, asking for canned food for local food banks, instead of candy. Over 10,000 pounds of food were collected for local food banks last year and the year before.

Local participants will kick off Halloween evening with a rally from 6 p.m. –7:30 p.m. at the new Town Square Park adjacent to the Transit Center. A Multi-Service Center truck will be on site from 6 p.m. –11 p.m. to accept donations of canned food. The rally will include music, free prizes and shirts, games and candy for participating students. Be sure to come in costume for the competition.

High school student leaders from all the high schools in the district are organizing this year’s events.

“We are expecting to see over 400 in attendance for the rally and our goal is to raise over 15,000 pounds of food to be donated by the end of the night,” Thomas Jefferson High School organizer Allen Lunde noted.

In addition, collection bins will be set up at Federal Way Memorial Stadium during sporting events taking place from Oct. 27 through Oct. 31. The district’s high schools will hold a competition called the Hunger Games during the week of Halloween to see which one can bring in the most canned foods.
