South King County residents interested in becoming Washington State University Master Gardeners are invited to an orientation meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at the Federal Way Library, 34200 First Way S.

The requirements of the program and what coordinators look for in applicants will be discussed. Applications for the 2016 class, which will meet on Saturdays from January through March, will be available.

The Master Gardener Program is a Washington State University Extension program in which the college trains volunteers to provide free environmentally-friendly, research-based gardening information to the public. Local Master Gardeners staff information booths each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Federal Way Farmers Market through the end of October and each Sunday at the Auburn Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 27.

Residents with plants or plant problems they can’t identify can bring a sample to the information booths. If the Master Gardeners on duty that day can’t identify the plant or problem they can send the sample to King County Master Gardener Diagnosticians at the Master Gardener office in Seattle.

Residents who can’t get to the markets can e-mail gardening questions to ask-a-mastergardener@live.com if answering the question doesn’t require seeing the plant.

For more information about the orientation meeting or the Master Gardener program contact Joyce Harms, coordinator of the Federal Way Master Gardener Clinic, at joyceharms@comcast.net or 253-952-0321.
