Federal Way High School senior develops conference for college readiness

Hawa Elias was a junior at Federal Way High School in the AVID program last spring when, through the process of discussing problems in communicating academic expectations to parents, she and a few friends developed a conference to prepare students and families for the task of planning their academic futures.

The idea began gaining steam, Federal Way Public School officials said.

“I had no idea it would get this big. No idea,” Elias said, who found support for the conference which focuses on college readiness, academic success and getting involved in community activities.

The M.I.C. (Motivate, Inspire and Change) Conference was borne from conversations about opportunity gaps in her community and the communities of her friends. She wanted to involve parents and students together in the pursuit of better futures for herself and her fellow students.

The M.I.C. Conference will be held at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 1 at, and sponsored by, Federal Way High School. Jefferson High School is also a sponsor of the conference. Students and parents who wish to learn more about preparing for students’ futures are welcome to attend the conference.
