VIDEO: Divers remove old tires from Puget Sound near Redondo

Several hundred old tires were removed Aug. 19 from the waters off Saltwater State Park by the U.S. Army dive team.

The project was sponsored by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. At least 500 tires are sunk in 50 to 60 feet of water over approximately 55 acres off the Redondo Beach shore, according to the department. The tires were placed there in the 1970s when it was common in the United States to use tires as artificial reefs, the department said. Those reefs are now considered environmental hazards and projects are in place across the nation to remove them.
