Soccer wrap: Season kicks off with teams overflowing with skill

The soccer talent pool has always been overflowing inside the borders of the Federal Way School District. That’s pretty evident when looking at all the state championship banners hanging from the rafters at Thomas Jefferson and Decatur high schools.

The Raiders have hoisted a state-record seven state championship trophies and Decatur won back-to-back Class 4A titles in 2000 and 2001. Federal Way and Beamer have also been to multiple state tournaments.

But this season might have some of the most individually-talented players in recent memory at the four Federal Way schools. Beamer and Jefferson are favorites to win the South Puget Sound League South and North divisions and Decatur might be the best team in the SPSL 3A.

All three schools are represented in the prestigious Seattle Sounders FC academy program. Beamer seniors Troy Peterson and Sean Okoli, TJ senior Chase Hanson and Decatur junior Dominique Dismuke are currently playing on the Sounders’ U-18 squad.

Federal Way is also represented on the Sounders’ U-16 team by players like Beamer’s Ike Crook, Ian Lange and Austin Sweeney, TJ’s Casey Kim and Decatur’s Conner Adkisson.

The Titans opened their SPSL South season with a perfect 2-0-0 record last week. Beamer beat the Curtis Vikings, 2-0, Tuesday and blew away Graham-Kapowsin Friday night, 8-0.

The Titans, who are ranked eighth in the nation by ESPNRise.com, got goals from Kelvin Horne and Sweeney during the win over Curtis. Horne scored in the 34th minute and Sweeney’s came in the 50th.

Against Graham-Kapowsin, Beamer got a hat trick from Peterson and two goals each from Okoli and Crook and another goal from Dan Tran.

Jefferson, which is ranked 32nd by ESPNRise.com, was upset in their SPSL North opener Tuesday by the Kentwood Conquerors. The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kim scored on an assist from Hanson just after halftime. But the Conks tallied the next two goals to get the win.

Jefferson rebounded with a 6-1 victory over Kentridge Friday. Hanson finished with a hat trick and Isidro Prado-Huerta tallied two goals. Senior Jimmy Oganga scored the other goal for TJ.

The Federal Way Eagles opened their SPSL South season with a 4-0 shutout of Spanaway Lake Friday. The Eagles got goals from Sean Rigney, Odason Pelogi, Alex Lewis and Luise Sanchez. Ben Willis picked up the shutout in net for Federal Way.
