PREP SPORTS WRAP: TJ stays unbeaten in gymnastics; Beamer, Decatur earn big wrestling wins

The Thomas Jefferson gymnastics team remained unbeaten in the South Puget Sound League North Division by winning a four-team meet Wednesday. The Raiders finished with 164.95 points, Tahoma was second with (140.85), followed by Kentridge (139.95) and Kent-Meridian (131.0).

As usual, TJ was led by Madi Kellar. The senior led a Raider sweep of the all-around Wednesday night by tallying 35.7 points. Kellar won both the uneven parallel bars with a 9.1 and the balance beam with a 9.0. Kellar was also third on the vault with an 8.85.

Twin sisters, Monica and Shelby Church, pulled off a rare tie for second in the all-around. Both finished with the identical total of 33.75 points. Monica Church won the vault with a 9.25 and was second on the floor (9.2). Shelby Church was second on the bars with an 8.1.

The Raiders finished unbeaten in the SPSL North last season, won the SPSL sub-district team title, West Central District crown and finished third at the Class 4A Gymnastics Championships inside the Tacoma Dome.

Beamer — The defending SPSL South champion Titans dropped their first league point in over a year Wednesday night when Emerald Ridge outdistanced them. The Jaguars finished the four-way meet with 169.3 points, which was ahead of Beamer’s 167.45. Sumner ended up with 146.75 points and Bonney Lake finished with 127.9.

Despite being outdistanced by Emerald Ridge, senior Sam West won the all-around title Wednesday night with 36.65 points. West won the uneven parallel bars with a 9.05 and was third in the vault (9.1) and floor exercise (9.5).

Leah Freeborn was third in the all-around with 35.8 points and was second on the vault (9.1) and beam (9.05). Sophomore Kasey Johnson won the balance beam with a 9.1 and was third on the floor (9.5).

Beamer was unbeaten in the SPSL a season ago and finished as the runner-up at the Class 4A state championships.

 

Wrestling

Beamer — The ultra-talented Titans blew away the Emerald Ridge Jaguars in their opening match of the SPSL South season Wednesday, 60-15. Beamer lost only two matches Wednesday and forfeited one.

Like they will all season, the Titans dominated at the lower weights. State tournament veterans Brett Dykman (113 pounds), Tre Uson (120), Aron Set-Heit (138) and Deshar House (145) all earned pins against Emerald Ridge. Beamer also got victories from Jordan Rhodes (106), Brian Dykman (126), Ares Carpio (132) and Kristoph Ricketts (182).

Decatur — The Gators dominated the Lakes Lancers Wednesday night in their SPSL South opener, 69-3. The Gators lost only one match during the dual and it was a 10-6 decision at 113 pounds.

Decatur got big pins from Keoni Aparis (126), TJ Barndt (145), Brandon Zimmerman (152), Nick Karis (160), Rowland Gaydosh (170), Spencer Smith (182), Dustin Robinson (220) and Kyle Gleed (285).
