Prep sports wrap: TJ baseball squeaks by Federal Way to remain unbeaten

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders got a big-time pitching performance from Austin Campbell and a pair of solo home runs to beat Federal Way on the baseball diamond Wednesday, 3-1.

Campbell threw a rare early-season complete game and limited the high-powered Eagle offense to just four hits at TJ. Campbell struck out six and walked only one during the win.

Jeff Brigham and Dylan Cooper provided Campbell all the run support he needed with a pair of solo home runs to overcome an early 1-0 Federal Way (2-3, 0-2) lead.

The Raiders (5-0 overall, 2-0 SPSL North) got by perennial North power Auburn Tuesday, 10-4, thanks to another solid pitching performance by Brett Fitzgerald. The senior allowed one earned run in five innings of work. Brigham finished 3 for 4 with four runs scored, Cooper knocked in three runs and Travis Quackenbush belted a two-run homer.

The Beamer Titans (4-1 overall, 2-0 SPSL South) squeaked by Decatur Wednesday, 6-4, to remain unbeaten in SPSL South play. The Titans got a pair of RBIs from Kenny Johnson and Matt Bower picked up the win on the mound. Jeff Apigo finished 2 for 2 with a run.

The win over Decatur came a day after the Titans beat Bethel 13-0. Brian Thomason allowed just three hits in five innings of work and Mac Gridley and Johnson both had three hits apiece.

The loss dropped the Gators to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the South. Decatur’s Brett Johnson ended up 2 for 3 with a double. The Gators lost to Rogers 12-2 on Tuesday in five innings.

Soccer

The Federal Way Eagles (2-1-0) picked up a pair of goals from senior Kelyn Rowe and cruised to a 3-0 win over the Kent-Meridian Royals in a South Puget Sound League North Division boys soccer game Tuesday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles’ Colby Lane got the scoring going with a goal in the second minute of the game. Jordan Ferguson picked up the shutout in net for Federal Way.

Beamer easily beat Spanaway Lake Tuesday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 5-1. The Titans (2-0-1) got a pair of goals from Austin Sweeney and single goals from Dan Tran, Keaton House and Michael Manolides.

Tahoma handed Jefferson its first loss of the season Tuesday, 4-3. The Bears tallied the last two goals of the game to overcome a 3-2 TJ lead in the second half. The Raiders (2-1-0) got goals from Austin Egerton and Charles Yi and an own goal from Tahoma.

Softball

The Todd Beamer Titans tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to down the Decatur Gators (0-5) Wednesday, 5-3. Sophomore Emma Blauser got the win on the mound with a complete game and Brianne Grosche finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Taylor Winton finished 2 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases.

Kayla Lipston had a triple for Decatur, who lost to Rogers Tuesday, 12-0.

The win improved Beamer to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SPSL South. The Titans also beat Bethel 6-1 Tuesday afternoon. Senior Sarah Petosa finished 2 for 3 and Blauser struck out five in seven innings.

Jefferson (4-1, 2-0) shut out Federal Way Wednesday, 10-0, in six innings and picked up a 3-1 win over Auburn Tuesday.

Against Federal Way, Alex Rodriguez allowed five hits and struck out seven and Allie Crowe, Lexi Goranson and Hannah Kiyohara all had two hits apiece.

Sadie Bynum had three of the Eagles’ five hits, including a double. Federal Way (0-5) also lost to Kentwood Tuesday, 8-2.

Katie Jackson was the story for TJ in the win over Auburn. The freshman allowed two hits and struck out 10 and the Raiders scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. Christi Bruin finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Goranson was 3 for 4 with a double.

Tennis

Jefferson won both singles matches Tuesday to down Todd Beamer, 3-2, in SPSL Central Division play. Averi Kitsch and Breanna Ziccarelli both won in straight sets at No. 1 and 2 singles.

The Raiders’ third win came from Mackenzie Qualls and Caroline Min at No. 1 doubles. Beamer got wins from Sara Miller and Kelly Erickson at No. 2 doubles and Jenny Hoefel and Taylor Lunka at No. 3.

Decatur, the defending state champions, remained unbeaten with a 4-1 win over Federal Way Tuesday. The Gators’ wins came from Sara Lin at No. 1 singles, Meghan Cassens and Chanel Carlson at No. 1 doubles, Christina Sessoms and Jen Kanesta at No. 2 and Kim and Lewis at No. 3. Federal Way’s lone win came from Andrea Ferguson at No. 2 singles.
