The Thomas Jefferson boys tennis team added another banner to its already impressive resumé Wednesday.

After rolling to an unbeaten regular season title in the South Puget Sound League Central Division, the Raiders collected the SPSL Tournament championship at Kent-Meridian High School. Jefferson outdistanced Kentridge, Kentlake and Puyallup to win the league title. The Raiders accumulated 41 points, compared to 29 by second-place Kentridge and 23 each from Kentlake and Puyallup.

Jefferson used its considerable depth to overpower the competition. The Raiders will send a pair of singles’ players and two doubles’ teams to the West Central District Tournament, which will be played in May. The top-10 finishers in each bracket qualified for districts.

Federal Way sophomore Mitch Stewart won his second consecutive SPSL singles’ championship Wednesday in dominating fashion. Stewart, one of the top junior tennis players in the nation, beat Beamer’s Joseph de la Cruz in the title match, 6-2, 6-2.

Stewart, who finished second at last spring’s state championships in singles, will be the favorite entering the 2012 Class 4A State Tennis Tournament. De la Cruz will advance to the district tournament as the SPSL’s second seed.

The TJ doubles team of Alex Lee and James Lee led the way by finishing in second place. The Lees lost to Alex Noyes and Paul Lennick in the title match, 6-3, 6-0.

Russell Stelzer and Zack Martin ended up in seventh place in doubles’ action after losing to a Kentlake pair in the fourth/seventh match Wednesday, 6-2, 0-6, 10-7.

Senior Kainoa Rosa was impressive for TJ in singles’ play. Rosa reached the semifinals before losing to de la Cruz, 6-3, 6-2, Tuesday. The next day, Rosa earned the SPSL’s sixth-place trophy by losing to Puyallup’s Brian Pinkard in the third/sixth match in a rugged three-setter, 6-4, 0-6, 10-6.

Jefferson’s Vivek Ramanujan finished in ninth place after beating Kentwood’s Ryan Proffitt in the ninth/10th match, 6-1, 6-2.

Soccer

The unbeaten Todd Beamer Titan girls soccer team notched another shutout Tuesday against the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles, 4-0.

The Titans improved to 10-0-1 in the South Puget Sound League South Division thanks to a pair of goals from Megan Anderson and Jenny Hoefel. Anderson’s goals game in the 20th and 43rd minutes Tuesday and Hoefel’s two came in the sixth and 76th minutes. Hoefel, a junior, leads Beamer in scoring with 16 goals and six assists in the Titans’ 11 matches this season. Anderson has eight goals.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Graf collected her eighth shutout of the season.

Federal Way (3-6-1) picked up a 5-0 shutout of Spanaway Lake Tuesday on the road. The Eagles got two goals each from Gabriela Pelogi and Bianca Arizpe and a single goal from Jessica Evenson. Sydney Slagg finished with two assists during the contest.

The Decatur Gators earned a huge overtime victory over Auburn Mountainview Tuesday when Ashely Graves tallied the lone goal of the match in the 85th minute during the 1-0 win.

The loss was the first of the SPSL 3A season by Auburn Mountainview (4-1-0) and moved the Gators to 3-2-0 in league play.

Goalkeeper Ericka Vunzinich earned the shutout in net for Decatur and Hannah Herbert had the assist on Graves’ late goal.

Volleyball

The Todd Beamer Titans dropped to 2-4 in the SPSL South with a four-game loss to Spanaway Lake Monday night, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, and a razor-thin loss to Curtis Wednesday, 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23.

Lexie Jones and Sophie Miller continued their strong seasons Monday. Jones finished with 13 kills and 17 digs to lead the Titans and Miller ended the match with 35 assists. Megan Huff finished with a match-high eight blocks.

Against Curtis, all four games were decided by two points. Beamer was led by the 14 kills of Jones and Megan Stumpf, along with 17 digs and 37 assists by Miller. Jones also contributed six aces on the night.

The Federal Way Eagles remained winless in the SPSL South with a loss to Puyallup Wednesday, 25-10, 25-17, 25-16. Federal Way (0-5 SPSL, 1-8 overall) was led by the nine kills of Autisa Westerlund.

Cross Country

The Todd Beamer Titans swept Federal Way and Curtis Wednesday afternoon in SPSL action. The Titan boys beat Federal Way, 17-34, and downed Curtis, 25-32, and the Beamer girls beat Federal Way, 24-31, and Curtis, 20-28.

On the boys’ side, Beamer’s Austin Jex won the race in 14:10, outdistancing teammates Blake Hansen (14:15) and Ishiah Belle (14:24).

The Federal Way boys, who also lost to Curtis, 25-32, were led by Mussie Simon (14:34) and Ben Willis (14:42).

On the girls’ side, Beamer got an impressive run from Paige Hallstrom, who won the race in 16:38. Hallstrom’s teammates Ashley Mason (17:33) and Lily Do (17:51) finished second and third, respectively.

Federal Way was led by Rachel Arnold (17:51), Aminata Dolo (17:54), Joy McConville (17:55) and Kayla Jacobus (18:34) during a 20-28 win over Curtis.
