Prep sports wrap: Federal Way cross country teams sweep three-way meet

The Federal Way cross country teams continued to impress early in the South Puget Sound League South Division season. The Eagles swept the Bethel Braves and Rogers Rams Wednesday afternoon at Federal Way High School. The victories moved the Eagle boys and girls to 4-0 in SPSL South.

On the boys’ side, Federal Way had the top-four individual finishers in the three-team race. Brandon Thronton blew the field away, running the 2.75-mile course in 14:09.89. Thornton helped the Eagles beat Bethel, 15-50, and down Rogers, 16-47.

Thornton was followed by Eagle teammates Patrick Crews (14:26.68), Nathan Brewster (14:27.21) and Meron Simon (14:27.60) in fourth place.

On the girls’ side, Federal Way squeaked by Rogers, 26-31, and easily beat Bethel, 15-46. The Eagles were led by the first-place run of Jasmine Johnson, who has established herself as one of the top runners in the SPSL. Johnson, who ran at the state championships last year, blistered the course Wednesday, winning by nearly two minutes in a time of 16:05.05.

Federal Way’s Khianna Duncan finished in second place in a time of 18:03.36, followed by two Rogers runners. Federal Way’s Amanda Steffins finished fifth in a time of 18:55.47.

The Thomas Jefferson girls split a three-way meet with Tahoma and Kentridge Wednesday in Kent. The Raiders beat Kentridge, 18-42, but lost a tight meet with Tahoma, 26-29. Jefferson and Tahoma have been two of the better programs in the state and the Bears entered the meet as the fourth-ranked team in 4A.

Tahoma’s Julianna Mack (20:04) and Elizabeth Oosterhout (20:12) finished first and second, followed by TJ’s Leah Kiyohara (20:42) and Breanna Calveri (20:44).

The Jefferson boys were swept by Kentridge and Tahoma Wednesday. Jacob Thoreson was the Raiders highest finisher in third place (17:15).

Girls soccer

Jefferson got a hat trick from Lindsey Dahl and beat the Auburn Trojans Thursday 5-0 to improve to 3-1-2 in SPSL North play. All five of the Raiders’ goals came in the second half, including single goals from Kassandra Carrel and Danielle Eagloski. Ashlyn Bruin and Kendra Wallace combined on the shutout in goal.

Beamer (5-0-2) remained in first place in the SPSL South by tying Rogers, 1-1, Tuesday. The Titans’ lone goal came from Breanna Straus in the 6th minute. Rogers (3-2-1) tied the game in the 48th minute.

Federal Way (3-2-1) got four goals each from Sydney Slaggs and Haley Ward during an 8-1 win over Bethel Tuesday.

Decatur (3-3-0 overall) fell to 0-2-0 in the SPSL 3A with a 1-0 loss to Bonney Lake Tuesday. Savannah Moorehouse scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute.

Volleyball

The Bethel Braves (1-1) won a marathon five-gamer Tuesday over Beamer, 25-15, 23-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-9. The loss dropped the Titans to 0-2 in the SPSL South.

Beamer got 42 assists and 10 digs from Sophie Miller and 20 kills and 27 digs from Lexie Jones. Sarah Paul also had nine kills and 20 digs for Beamer.

Decatur (1-2 SPSL 3A, 2-5 overall) split a pair of matches Monday and Wednesday. The Gators needed five games to beat Lakes Monday, 25-16, 25-13, 21-25, 21-25, 15-9, and were swept by Peninsula Wednesday. Christina Sessoms finished with 10 blocks in the two matches.

Rogers swept Federal Way (0-2, 3-5) Tuesday, 25-20, 26-24, 25-12. The Eagles got 10 assists, 11 digs from Luaipou Lologo and 17 digs from Kara Highberg.

The Christian Faith High School Eagles swept Quilcene in their Class B SeaTac League opener Tuesday at the EX3 Teen Center in Federal Way, 25-9, 25-18, 25-19.

Golf

The Decatur boys and girls swept Lakes Tuesday. The Gator boys won, 69-58, and the girls beat Lakes, 103-65. Lloyd Braun led the Gator boys with a 38 at Twin Lakes and Amanda Beyke earned medalist honors for the girls with a 40.

The Jefferson girls dominated Federal Way Tuesday at Riverbend, 105-41. Alexus Song and Sarah Yu tied for medalist honors and Federal Way was led by Emily Victor.

The TJ boys got by Federal Way, 52-48, despite the Eagles’ Jordan Ferguson shooting the low round of the day at Northshore with a 39.

Tennis

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders remained unbeaten on the season with three wins this week, including a pair of non-leaguers. The Raiders (7-0, 10-0) beat Kent-Meridian Monday, 3-2, Curtis Tuesday, 5-0, and Mount Rainier Wednesday, 5-0.
