High school golfers battle at state tournament competition

Decatur's Spencer Clapp and Jefferson's Sean Yi had strong showings at their respective competitions, with Clapp taking 9th at the 3A Boys tournament, while Yi finished second in the 4A competition.

The 2014 golf season wound down this last weekend across various sites in Washington State. Federal Way schools had a number of representatives on hand, and while none took home the top spot, each had a respectable showing.

Decatur High School saw juniors Celia Beyke and Spencer Clapp finish near the top of the field. Beyke fought her way to a 15th place finish at Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland, WA. She shot a 91 and a 83 over the two days of the tournament. Last season, Beyke was a fifth-place finisher at the state competition.

Clapp played the Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield, WA, shooting a 78 and 75 over the two days to tie for ninth place. This 2014 showing was a strong improvement over his 2013 showing, in which he finished tied for 17th.

The 4A Boys tournament was held at Camas Meadows Golf Course in Camas, with Sean Yi having the strongest showing of any golfer with a second-place finish. Yi’s 69 and 77 were good enough to earn that second place finish, and speak well to the freshman’s promise in the years to come. Todd Beamer junior Dax Wallat garnered a 38th place finish, shooting 79 and 81 over the two days of the tournament.
