Federal Way has its share of imperfections. Every week we report on crime, questionable actions and other types of bad news.

I’ve said before that one of my most favorite type of news to report on is the good news — and the people I get to meet who inspire me. Here is a look at some of those people who inspired me and the community in 2014, in no particular order:

• Dom Cooks. There’s not much more I can say about this incredible Decatur High School student who made his way into countless headlines in 2014. He inspired me to be a better person overall. Cooks is greatly missed.

• Dianne Zoro. This mother of four has worked with the Federal Way Coalition Against Trafficking since 2011. I first met her this year in the pouring rain, when Gordon Trucking in Pacific, Washington added her missing daughter’s photo to a trucking trailer. Zoro’s daughter, Danica Childs, disappeared from a Kent motel associated with drugs and prostitution in December of 2007.

Zoro came into my office last week and we shared some tears, as she told me the anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance is this week. Zoro has inspired me to be a better mother. Her daughter will be in my thoughts this week.

• Bob and Linda Bjorneby. This couple, who owns Bob Bjorneby’s Federal Way CARSTAR Collision, have made wishes come true for sick youth through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Over the summer, the couple fixed up 18-year-old David Padilla’s 2006 Ford Mustang and made it brand new. They spent their own resources — time and money — to help this young man with bone cancer.

The Bjornebys have inspired me to give what I can.

• Jon and Wendy McIntosh. This couple was amazing to watch as they bustled about recently, helping 120 struggling families through the Adopt-A-Family program at Grace Church. They have inspired me to rally the community to get things done.
