The Federal Way Mirror’s editorial board endorses the following school board, fire commissioner and water commissioner candidates in the 2013 general election.

The Federal Way Mirror’s editorial board endorses the following candidates in the 2013 general election.

Federal Way School board pos. 1: Geoffery McAnalloy

Geoffery McAnalloy’s enthusiasm and passion for education will be a breath of fresh air for the Federal Way School Board. The incumbent, Ed Barney, should be commended for his willingness to serve on the board for the past 12 years. However, it’s time for a change. The school district will benefit from McAnalloy’s energy and ideas for engaging the community. He has children in the district and seems more in tune with the needs of Federal Way students. He also gets the nod for being willing to question the district’s grading system and administrative decisions.

Federal Way School board pos. 4: Medgar Wells

Both candidates in this race would serve Federal Way students well. Medgar Wells gets the nod because of his lifetime of hands-on experience in schools as a teacher, principal and administrator. Wells presents an open-minded view of education and seems willing to consider anything that helps children succeed. One of his priorities is reaching out to young students who are struggling. Early learning has been identified as a key component to helping young students succeed in Federal Way. As a principal, he interacts with today’s youth daily.

South King Fire and Rescue commissioner: Bill Gates

Bill Gates is the stronger candidate because he is better suited to address the financial obligations of the fire district. That is the board’s priority. Gates also gets the edge for his past professional experience in the finance field. His opponent, Jerry Galland, raises valid questions about the board’s actions, spending and transparency. However, Galland’s campaign has relied on negative portrayals of his opposition instead of presenting a compelling reason why he would be a better fire commissioner.

Lakehaven Utility District commissioner: Don Miller

Don Miller has served on the Lakehaven board of commissioners since 1983. He faces an intelligent and capable challenger in Marie-Anne Harkness, who is eager to serve on the board and learn more about the water district. Either candidate would make a fine commissioner. However, Harkness does not present a compelling case for replacing Miller, who has been engaged with the water district and its projects for three decades.
