Joseph Anthony Penwell, 76, originally from Cincinnati, OH, was called home by his Heavenly Father on September 8, 2023, in Federal Way, WA. Born on January 1, 1947, Joe bravely battled Parkinson’s disease for over 25 years. His faith in God provided him with strength and comfort throughout his journey. He never allowed the disease to define him and continued to live his life to the fullest.

Joe found immense joy in his family, particularly his wife Robin Penwell, who brought him happiness, love, and strength, without whom he would not have lived such a full and long life. He was immensely proud of his two sons, Garrett and Justin Penwell, who have grown into remarkable men and steadfast husbands. Joe’s sister, Mary Pat McQueary and the rest of the McQueary family, held a special place in his heart. He was also blessed with the love and support of his step-daughter Jen Martinez. Joe will be deeply missed by his extended family, including daughters-in-law Katy and Charlotte Penwell, and son-in-law Mark Martinez, and many grandchildren.

Joe’s faith played a central role in his life, and he worshipped at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Federal Way. Joe proudly served as a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, exemplifying his strong faith and commitment to serving others.

Joe obtained a BS in accounting from Western Washington University. He also served his country with honor and distinction in the Air Force for four years on active duty and an additional 23 years in the reserves, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. His military service was a testament to his dedication and commitment.

In his professional life, Joe worked for the Environmental Protection Agency for two decades, where his contributions made a lasting impact.

In his leisure time, Joe was an avid supporter of Seattle sports teams, particularly the Mariners, Seahawks, and WSU Cougars. One of his favorite pastimes was dressing up as Santa Claus, bringing holiday cheer to his grandchildren and others.

A funeral service will be held on November 3, 2023, at 10:30 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, located at 30525 8th Ave S, Federal Way, WA 98003.

Following the funeral service, a private burial service will take place at 2:00 PM at Tahoma Military Cemetery, located at 18600 SE 240th St, Kent, WA 98042.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Parkinson’s Foundation, Relay for Life, or Honor Flight.
