More than 200 runners participated in Todd Beamer High School’s “We Step Up Federal Way” 5K color run on Saturday, March 26 at Celebration Park.

Organized by the high school’s Free the Children Club, $5,800 was raised to help villages in Ecuador with agriculture and food sustainability.

Speakers Anastassia Kostin, Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell, Councilwoman Susan Honda, Councilwoman Lydia Assefa-Dawson and her son kicked off the event before the community ran the carefully mapped out 3-mile route. As runners passed through check points, they were pelted with bright powdered paint.

Organizers of the event thank the city of Federal Way, the police department, South King Fire and Rescue, Wild Waves, the U.S. Army, Northwest Mini, DJ Trophy, Em Services, and Herff Jones for their sponsorship of the color run.
