What does Jay Inslee, the Democratic candidate for Washington governor, have in common with Napoleon Bonaparte and Buddha?

Their words of wisdom are lumped together on the popular quotation website BrainyQuote.

The Federal Way Mirror stumbled across a 2004 quote about global warming by Inslee when performing a web search for “treasure quotes” for an unrelated project. The quote stems from a guest column by Inslee, titled “The Red Planet should be a red flag for Earth,” which appeared in the Seattle Times:

“On Earth, we still have a beautiful atmosphere that precisely maintains a thermally driven climatic system that shelters, shields and sustains our natural treasures.”

A quick search did not reveal any BrainyQuote entries for Inslee’s challenger, Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna.

Three entries below Inslee’s quote is a phrase from the influential French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte, who died in 1821: “Riches do not consist in the possession of treasures, but in the use made of them.”

Three entries above Inslee’s quote are the words from Buddha, the ancient spiritual leader from India: “Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.”

Inslee vacated his U.S. Congress seat earlier this year to focus on running for governor in 2012. Inslee represented Washington’s 1st congressional district, which includes Edmonds and Bainbridge Island, from 1999-2012.

BrainyQuote claims it “hand-selects quotes for publication on our site, in our RSS feeds, on Facebook and on Twitter.
