UPDATE: Federal Way police said Monday they located and interviewed the driver of the suspect vehicle over the weekend.
A tip led officers to the driver, a 52-year-old Des Moines man, and the man was pulled over after he left a Federal Way restaurant. Police interviewed him about the possible road rage incident and, in the course of that investigation, discovered the man was driving on a suspended license and did not have vehicle insurance.
The driver was cited for third-degree driving with a suspended license and for driving without insurance. His vehicle was impounded.
The fatal accident and the possible road rage incident preceding it remain under investigation. The original story from Friday remains below.
A man killed in a single-vehicle accident in Federal Way on Friday morning may have been involved in a road rage incident prior to the crash, and police are asking for help identifying the driver of another vehicle that may have been involved.
The accident occurred near South 312th Street and Pacific Highway South just before 9 a.m. when a vehicle driven by a 60-year-old man crashed into a tree. Arriving officers found the man unconscious and performed CPR, but the man died after medical responders arrived.
Police believe the accident was caused by the driver suffering a medical emergency, but witness statements gave investigators reason to suspect a road rage incident may have occurred before the crash.
The suspect vehicle in the incident is described as an older, black Chevy pickup with a San Francisco 49ers sticker on the back window and possibly a silver-colored toolbox in the truck bed. The driver of the pickup is described as a white male in his 20s.
