Toddlers found wandering alone at night: At 11:27 p.m. July 11 in the 2100 block of S. 300th St., police found toddlers outside alone at night. The children were found shoeless and scantily dressed huddled in blankets next to a chain link fence.

Both children said they were on a walk with their father and got lost. The girl gave police officers her name and her brother’s name, but neither child knew where they lived. The boy had a red scrape above his eyebrow and a red scratch down his face, which his sister said came from running into the grill.

Police identified a possible relative’s house and were able to wake up a man who identified himself as the children’s grandfather. The man said the children lived with him since their parents split up, but he is not the legal guardian.

The man did not know where either parent was and told police he had put the children to bed and went to sleep himself. Police referred the case to Child Protective Services because the children were found 420 feet from the home and had crossed a busy residential intersection alone at night without the man realizing they were gone.
