Thomas Jefferson High School whizzes past the math competition

From July 19-24, 50 members of the Thomas Jefferson High School Math Team competed in Knoxville, Tenn., at the 49th annual Mu Alpha Theta High School Math Honor Society’s National Convention. aOver the course of the week, students participated as individuals as well as teams ranging in size from two to 50 people. TJHS has always placed in the top 10 at this competition, but at the end of this year’s convention, the Raiders placed fourth overall in the sweepstakes competition, their second-highest finish yet.

Results

• Joseph Lee placed 1st in Statistics

• Jon Mount placed 2nd in Alpha Chalk Talk and 9th in Alpha Gemini

Patrick Clay placed 4th in Discrete Math, 14th in Number Theory, 7th in Combinations and Permutations, and 14th in Calculus Individual

• Brian Cheng placed 4th in Matrices and Determinants, 9th in Quadratics, and 12th in Equations & Inequalities

• Daniel Ahn placed 4th in Equations & Equalities, and 19th in Trigonometry Individual

• Jason Pu placed 4th in Theta Chalk Talk, 10th in Statistics, and 15th in Math History

• Peter Huss placed 5th in Sequences & Series

• Ari Schumer placed 7th in Sequences & Series, 11th in Integration, 9th in Calculus Applications, and 18th in Calculus Individual

• Jun Park placed 7th in Algebra Individual

Jason Allmaras placed 8th in Calculus Areas and Volumes, 11th in Limits and Derivatives, and 10th in Differential Equations

• Jonathon Wu placed 9th in Matrices and Vectors

• Felicia Bunting placed 9th in Mu Chalk Talk

• Averi Kitsch placed 9th in Complex Numbers

• Kevin Suh placed 10th in Sequences and Series

• Jordan Gaspay placed 10th in Matrices and Determinants, and 13th in Radicals
