Teams make a mark at SPSL girls wrestling tournament

Federal Way wins the girls team title and senior Arian Carpio of Todd Beamer won her division at the South Puget Sound League girls wrestling tournament at Rogers High School on Jan. 3.

Federal Way’s team scored a total of 150 points, while Todd Beamer came in at third place with a total of 103 points. Thomas Jefferson High School wrestlers came in fifth place with 57 points. There were 21 teams participating in the tournament.

Carpio pinned Kentwood’s Sara Mozaleskie in just 27 seconds in a 135-pound championship bout. The 12th pin of the season pushed the Titans star to 13-0.

Tally Thomas at 170 pounds took the top spot in Federal Way’s team standings, with a score of 150 to 135.5 over Puyallup High School’s top wrestler. Todd Beamer’s Fernanda Carmona, at 155 pounds, was also a champion.

Ana Sanchez at 110 pounds received second place. Third place winners included Amanda Henderson at 100 pounds, Olivia Weinberger at 120 pounds, Jillian Strickland at 125 pounds, Anna LaPella at 135 pounds, Nakea Ridders at 170 pounds, Roxanne Maidesil at 190 pounds and Alisia Cendrowski at 190 pounds.

“I was proud to see the girls continue to grow into a cohesive unit,” said Travis Mango, Federal Way coach. “The girls truly exemplified the family motto Federal Way High School wrestling stands by. They worked together and supported one another from the beginning to the end. The girls stood up for one another and pushed each other to reach their maximum potential and to have continued success.”
