Charges against Kareem Harris, 28, were amended Friday from second-degree attempted murder to first-degree murder.

Harris was first charged Oct. 29, 2009, after he allegedly shot co-worker Wilbur Lee Gant several times the previous day outside Gant’s home in the 100 block of South 340th Street in Federal Way. Gant died Jan. 10, 2011. King County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death was in direct relation to the shooting injuries Gant received 15 months prior.

The two men formerly worked together at Milgard Windows in Fife until Harris was fired in May 2009 for timecard fraud, according to court records. Harris believed Gant played a role in his firing. The two men were involved in a dispute outside Gant’s home regarding the circumstances when Harris allegedly shot Gant.

Harris pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder charge Friday and is scheduled to go to trial April 18.
