A 12-year-old girl was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center this morning after being hit by a car on her way to school.

According to King County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Cindi West, the Kilo Middle School student was crossing the street near Camelot Elementary (4041 S. 298th St.) in Auburn, when a teenage girl driving eastbound struck her. That accident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m.

West said there’s no indication the teenage driver was speeding or impaired and was also on her way to school.

The 12-year-old was not walking in a crosswalk.

Federal Way Public Schools spokeswoman Kassie Swenson said Camelot Elementary and Kilo Middle School staff responded quickly to the emergency, which involved other vehicles as well.

“Additional counseling for students and staff will be at both schools,” Swenson said, adding that the district’s thoughts are with the family at this time.

The victim suffered head injuries.
