About 4:30 p.m. Nov. 28, a Washington State Patrol Trooper working in South King County was struck broadside by a DUI driver while in her patrol car traveling southbound on 16th Avenue South.

Trooper Stephanie Bjorkman was taken to St. Francis Hospital with minor shoulder injuries, facial lacerations and bumps to the head after a 2007 Ford F150 pickup driven by 46-year-old Terry E. Wilcox of University Place lost control due to excessive speed as he was attempting to turn from westbound State Route 18 to northbound 16th Avenue South. (More commonly known as the SR 18-Enchanted Parkway intersection).

Wilcox’s Ford pickup lost control in the dedicated right-turn only lane, then struck the pedestrian sidewalk, sending the truck airborne careening into and through the northbound lanes of 16th Avenue South. The pickup then crossed the raised median and slammed into the southbound patrol car, striking it on the driver’s side.

Wilcox was not injured in the collision and was subsequently arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication. Bjorkman was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries. It is unknown when she will return to duty, according to the state patrol.
