Shoreline man sentenced for vehicular homicide

The 39-year-old man was arrested in Federal Way in September 2021.

The King County Superior Court sentenced a Shoreline man on Feb. 24 to seven years and three months in prison for charges in relation to the vehicular homicide of 55-year-old Alie Kabba.

Steven Tyler Williamson, 39, pleaded guilty to felony charges including vehicular homicide and hit and run injury; as well as a felony charge of attempting to elude police and a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving in relation to Williamson also leading police on a high-speed chase from Green Lake to Federal Way.

Nearing midnight on Sept. 9, 2021, Williamson, driving in a pickup truck, sped northbound on the Aurora Bridge while weaving through traffic, according to King County Superior Court documents. Williamson then struck Kabba with his vehicle, a pedestrian, as Kabba walked across Aurora Avenue North.

The impact of the collision ripped Kabba’s right leg from his body, throwing it into the southbound lane.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., two callers reported to police a pedestrian struck by a grey truck in the 4600 Block of Aurora Avenue North and “a body in the roadway.”

Williamson continued speeding northbound with blood on his side headlight. Pieces of his side mirror were left at the scene. Law enforcement pronounced Kabba dead at the scene.

After an officer in a patrol vehicle witnessed Williamson speeding and signaled for Williamson to stop, Williamson proceeded to drive through multiple red lights, heading northbound.

With several patrol vehicles in pursuit, Williamson switched off the truck’s headlights and taillights and led police from Green Lake to Lynnwood driving 80 to 100 miles per hour.

At approximately 12:25 a.m. southbound on Interstate 5 to Federal Way, the Washington State Patrol tactically rammed Williamson’s truck. The truck lost traction and came to a stop.

According to documents, Williamson smelled strongly of alcohol, with bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

When officers asked Williamson why he failed to stop for police, he responded that “he was teaching them to drive,” according to the prosecuting attorney’s case summary.

The Seattle Police Department arrested Williamson on Sept. 10, 2021, at 2:04 a.m. in Federal Way and booked him into the King County Jail on $250,000 bail, according to documents.

Williamson accepted a plea deal on Jan. 12, 2023, before his trial, reducing the penalties on two of his felony charges.
