Federal Way High School student recognized: Sam Tang, a 4.0 Cambridge program student at Federal Way High School, received a 2010/2011 NSLI for Youth Scholarship. The NSLI for Youth Scholarship is sponsored by the United States government and is administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. This scholarship will send Sam to Amman, Jordan, to learn Arabic for seven weeks from June 15 to August 4.
Todd Beamer juniors recognized: Costner McKenzie, a junior at Todd Beamer High School, was recognized for National Merit Achievement. The National Achievement Scholarship Program honors academically talented black American high school students and provides scholarships for a substantial number of outstanding program participants. Out of 160,000 of the students who entered the 2011 National Merit Program, McKenzie, from Todd Beamer High School, will be recognized as the top 4,700th highest-scoring in the 2011 National Achievement Program, which put him in the top 97th percentile. Todd Beamer student Michael Onorati and another student were also recognized for meeting the requirements to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Transitioning to Middle School: The Federal Way 320th Library will host a free “Transitioning into Middle School” program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. May 12. The program will provide advice on how to navigate the academic, social and emotional challenges of this transitional period. Parents and students are invited. Refreshments will be served. Legislative Youth Advisory Council: The Washington State Legislature is seeking nominations for youth ages 14 to 18 to serve on the 2010-2011 Legislative Youth Advisory Council. Participation on the council is an opportunity for young people to intimately observe and experience the legislative process through an interactive lesson in civic engagement and activism. College Bound Scholarship: Students in seventh and eighth grades are eligible to apply for the College Bound Scholarship. The scholarship provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of the cost. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees plus $500 for books at Washington public colleges and universities. Low-income seventh- and eighth-grade students who sign a pledge by June 30 of their eighth-grade year are eligible. Students promise to graduate from high school, demonstrate good citizenship, and seek admission to a college or university.
