The 17th annual car show welcomed over 100 participants, dozens of attendees on Saturday.

Over 100 vintage and modern cars were on display Saturday, Aug. 27, at the 17th annual car show fundraiser, hosted by the Federal Way Lions Club.

Shined to perfection and hoods popped, judges wandered the rows of cars to determine the winners in nearly 60 categories ranging from Best of Show, People’s Choice and Veterans’ Choice to Best Roadster, Best Motorcycle and Dazzling Display.

“It’s a little lean this year, but I’m told we put on a very good show,” said Bob Darrigan, Lions Club membership chair. Since its beginning, the car show fundraiser has generated over $142,000 in scholarships for local students, he said. This year adds approximately $9,500 to the scholarship funds.

Dozens of attendees cruised through The Commons mall lot, marveling at colorful hot rods and rebuilt rides by dedicated owners. Regardless of where car owners drove in from, the culture brought them together.

For Olympia resident Jaree Johnson, this was her first time entering her 2007 Dodge Magnum in a car show — and she walked away with her first win.

“She’s come a long way in a year,” Johnson said of her car. She got the car as a project to work on with her kids during the pandemic. Now, the family owns three similar vehicles to work on together and show off.

“The car community is really healthy for me,” she said about meeting people from all different backgrounds at car events. She even met one of her best friends because of a chance interaction at a car show. “After being in the pandemic, it brought me out of my shell.”
