Overturned military vehicle causes I-5 backup near Kent, Federal Way

An overturned military vehicle blocked most lanes of northbound Interstate 5 near Kent and Federal Way late Wednesday morning, April 10.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. near South 272nd Street, according to the Washington State Patrol.

“A military vehicle is on its side,” Trooper Rick Johnson posted on X at about 12:53 p.m.. “No serious injuries but multiple lanes blocked.”

Johnson said tows are on the way but it will take some time to clean up and advised alternate routes. The crash has led to traffic backups on I-5 as well as alternate routes on State Route 512 and State Route 167.

The HOV and left lane are the only open lanes, as of early Wednesday afternoon.

The military vehicle is from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma. The military often has convoys to Yakima for training.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
