12 people displaced after Friday afternoon apartment fire

The second-floor unit caught fire around 2:50 p.m. Oct. 8.

Twelve people and three pets have been displaced after an apartment caught fire on Friday afternoon in Federal Way.

At about 2:51 p.m. Oct. 8, South King Fire crews were dispatched to reports of a fire at the Panther Lake Apartments (33 S. 342nd Place) in Federal Way.

Large flames and heavy smoke were seen coming from second-floor apartment balcony. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly with only minor extension into the building, said Capt. Brad Chaney of South King Fire.

There were no injuries to people, pets or firefighters, Chaney said. The apartment building was evacuated. Eight adults, four children, two dogs and one cat were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.

Fire investigators from the King County Sheriff’s Office responded to scene to determine the cause of the fire.
