The community joined Federal Way Mirror, City Council members and police department officials, among others, at the ribbon cutting of the new downtown police substation this afternoon.

Mayor Jim Ferrell said the substation will allow the police department to keep downtown safe with the new businesses cropping up and the park set to open this July.

The police substation is located across from the Federal Way Transit Center and is highly visible with new signage, officials said.

The 2,100-square-foot office space was donated by the property’s owner Pat Rhodes. It provides storage for the Special Operations Unit equipment, and work and meeting space for the squad.

The substation is located at 31620 23rd Ave. S. in Federal Way.
