The city of Federal Way and the Federal Way Police Department are encouraging local residents and neighborhoods to join them in celebrating the National Night Out Against Crime from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2.

National Night Out is a “community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live,” according to the National Association of Town Watch. The event, first held in 1984, occurs nationwide.

Residents can register their neighborhood on the city’s website to get visits from city officials, Federal Way police officers and South King Fire and Rescue firefighters.

“National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness; strengthen neighborhood and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back,” said Cathy Schrock, spokeswoman for the city and the police department. “It is a great night to learn about crime prevention, celebrate your community and spend time with your neighbors.”

Information and registration are available at www.cityoffederalway.com by clicking on the National Night Out link on the main page and then clicking on the web address under the “links” heading.
