Miles for Meso 5K run/walk returns for 12th year

The running, walking, wheelchair, youth and virtual races are held Tuesday, July 4.

Lace up your running shoes and don’t forget your water bottle. The Miles for Meso 5k Run/Walk 2023 is at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 4.

Returning for its 12th year, the Miles for Meso race is held in Memory of Dick Dyhrman, a Weyerhaeuser Company geologist; Bud Hatley, a Federal Way school district athletic director; Bob Stewart, a Federal Way High School teacher and coach; and other Washington residents who have died from mesothelioma, according to the City of Federal Way. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused from asbestos.

All proceeds are donated to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation to support patients and their families, provide research grants and create national awareness.

Race organizers have set the fundraising goal at $20,000. The 5K route takes participants along the BPA trail and through Celebration Park in Federal Way with views of Mount Rainier.

The 5K run/walk and wheelchair races starts and ends at the Federal Way Community Center (875 S. 333rd St.) and all participants must register at runsignup.com. There is also a free 1/4 mile Kids Dash for children ages 10 and under, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

All participants are also encouraged to dress up in patriotic outfits.

Each pre-registered runner or walker receives a long sleeve tech-fabric shirt; shirt sizes are not guaranteed for those who registered after June 30. In addition, age group awards, a raffle drawing and prizes are available for participants.

Pricing for adults is $30 while youth ages 17 and under are $25. Pre-registration ends July 1. The virtual 5K run/walk is $20.
