Mason and Sophia were the two most popular baby names in 2011 in Washington, according to a release from the state Department of Health (DOH).

Mason made a significant jump from 11th in 2010 to first in 2011, and the name Liam jumped from 8th place to second between 2010 and 2011.

The most popular names for girls remained virtually unchanged between 2010 and 2011, according to the DOH.

Rounding out the rest of the list for most popular baby boy names in Washington state were Alexander, Ethan, Jacob, Daniel, Noah, William, Logan and Benjamin.

Nationally, the most popular names in 2011 were Jacob, Mason, William, Jayden, Noah, Michael, Ethan, Alexander, Aiden and Daniel.

For girls, the most popular names in 2011 after Sophia were Olivia, Emma, Isabella, Emily, Ava, Abigail, Madison, Chloe and Elizabeth. Nationally, the most popular girls names were Isabella, Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Ava, Emily, Abigail, Madison, Mia and Chloe.

According to the DOH, more parents go outside of “popular” names, with less than half of all baby boys being given a name from the top 100 name list, and only about one-third of baby girl names coming from the top 100 list.

In 1980, 73 percent of all baby boy names came from the top 100, while 53 percent of all girl baby names came out of the top 100.

The DOH notes that there were 107,562 pregnancies total in Washington state in 2011, and 86,929 babies born in 2011. Of that 86,929, 42,325 were girls, and 44,604 were boys. According to the DOH, the total numbers of pregnancies and births in 2011 continues a downward trend since 2008. That year saw 115,092 pregnancies and 90,270 births. The largest age group of new mothers was between 25-29 years old, while the DOH notes teen pregnancies and births continued to drop in 2011, down 31 percent from 2008.
