Suspects have not been located.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest after two men attempted to steal his car in Federal Way on Sunday afternoon, according to a family member.

At about 3:15 p.m. Aug. 29, officers responded to reports of a shooting at the AutoZone Auto Parts store near the 33500 block of 21st Avenue SW, according to Cmdr. Kurt Schwan of Federal Way Police.

On scene, officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, Schwan said. Officers provided aid until medics and South King Fire & Rescue crews arrived. The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries.

A close family member, who asked not to be named, confirmed the victim’s age.

Preliminary information determined the victim was approach by two men in the parking lot and an altercation occurred, which resulted in the shooting, Schwan said. However as of Sunday night, police said they did not know the reason for the altercation.

According to the victim’s family member, the man was approached by two men who were attempting to steal his car. When he refused to give up the keys, the men shot him, she said.

“He was a victim who now is fighting for his life in ICU,” the family member said.

The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival and have not been located. Police are investigating.
