Man in critical condition after drowning at Steel Lake

Rescue swimmers pulled the man from the lake on Saturday evening, Aug. 8.

One man is in critical condition after rescue swimmers retrieved him from the bottom of Steel Lake on Saturday evening.

At about 5:47 p.m. on Aug. 8, SKFR crews were dispatched to a possible patient in the water at Steel Lake Park, said Capt. Brad Chaney, public information officer for South King Fire. Steel Lake Park is located at 2410 S. 312th Street in Federal Way.

Upon arrival, first responders determined there was a patient, a man in his early 20s, with an unknown down time underwater.

South King rescue swimmers deployed into the water and retrieved a patient off the bottom of the lake, Chaney said.

After getting the patient to shore, crews initiated CPR in partnership with King County Medic One and the man was transported to Harborview Medical Center by King County Medic One in critical condition.

The Mirror has reached out to Harborview for an update on the man’s condition.

On-scene video from freelance organization South Sound Media Production shows rescue swimmers searching for the man within the designated swimming area of the lake enclosed by docks.

Several signs are posted at Steel Lake Park to indicate there is no lifeguard on duty.
